Proactive Summer Prep for Winter Success

As the hot, humid months of the summer have us turning on the air conditioning or finding an outdoor pool for respite from the heat, SIMA (Snow & Ice Management Association), also wants you to think about snow and ice.

Preparing for snow and ice services in the summer is important for several reasons:

  1. It allows companies to be fully prepared and ready to serve clients without delay when winter arrives. By starting preparations early, snow and ice management firms can ensure they have the necessary equipment, training, and processes in place before the first snowfall.

  2. Summer preparation enables companies to conduct thorough site inspections and develop clear site maps and scope of work outlines. This proactive approach helps mitigate risks and clarifies responsibilities for both the service provider and the client.

  3. Early preparation gives companies time to properly train their team members on best practices and standardized processes. This ensures consistent, high-quality service throughout the winter season.

  4. Starting in summer allows companies to assess and maintain their equipment, performing necessary repairs or upgrades before the busy winter season. This helps prevent equipment failures during critical snow removal operations.

  5. It provides an opportunity for snow and ice management companies to review and update their contracts, insurance coverage, and risk management strategies. This is crucial for protecting both the company and its clients from potential liabilities.

  6. Summer preparation aligns with SIMA’s recommended 52-week timeline for streamlining the RFP and contract negotiation process. This ensures that all necessary arrangements are in place well before winter begins.

Do not get caught in the rush to do everything in the fall. Larger, complex facilities are determining their snow and ice service providers earlier each year. Make the summer a time when your company and team start planning for winter services.
