When it comes to installing snowplows, wiring can be a major factor in determining how quickly and efficiently the job gets done. Snow Plow News asked dealers about their preferred truck brands for plow wiring, and here’s what they had to say about the easiest and most efficient setups.

Dodge: Quick and Simple Wiring
Greg Saltz from NESS Auto highlighted Dodge trucks as a top choice for plow wiring, specifically models from 2015 and newer. “Dodge has one of the best setups because they have a full-line pigtail underneath the fuse box,” Saltz said. William Fries from Xtreme Fabrication also praised Dodge for its convenience: “The upfitter wiring harness with the plow prep package makes it easy. You just pop out the fuse box, pull the harness, and splice in your wires. A skilled installer can wire a Dodge in less than 30 minutes.”
Ford: Fast Installations with Some Hurdles
Erik Flores from Push-N-Pull mentioned that Ford trucks are often the fastest to wire. “We can install a plow and wire it up on a Ford faster than any other brand, especially the newer models,” Flores noted. However, he pointed out that Ford’s LED wiring for newer Douglas Dynamics plows requires a few extra steps, and diesel engine models present a challenge due to limited space around the engine.
Chevy/GMC: Improved Design for Easier Installs
Jerre Heyer from Jerre’s Service gave a nod to Chevy and GMC trucks for recent improvements. “GMC has historically been difficult due to the grille and subframe design, but now they’ve added a removable plastic panel for easier mounting,” Heyer said. Chevy has followed suit, making it simpler to access light plugs by integrating them at the top of the hood area. “You no longer have to take apart the light assembly, which has made installs much quicker.”
Conclusion: Dodge and Ford Lead the Way
For dealers, Dodge and Ford seem to be the go-to brands when it comes to ease of wiring for snowplows. While each manufacturer is making strides to simplify installations, Dodge’s upfitter harness and Ford’s overall speed are favored by experts. Meanwhile, Chevy and GMC are catching up with improved designs, making the process less cumbersome. Regardless of the brand, advancements in truck and plow technology continue to make life easier for contractors in the snow removal industry.
