SIMA, the Snow and Ice Management Association now has 1,700 members in the U.S. and Canada. The SIMA Foundation is a non-profit trade association with a focus on training, events and best practices related to snow plowing, ice management and business management. SIMA has a mission to provide more educational scholarships and training for activities that attract, develop and retain professionals in the private snow and ice management service industry. Mike Stevens, Editor of Snow Plow News talks to Martin Tirado, Executive Director of Snow and Ice Management Association about some of the things SIMA is striving for in the future.
SIMA acknowledges that insurance is an ongoing challenge in the snow and ice world due to the slip and fall issues that exist. SIMA is trying to find ways they can enhance safety, best practices and training, so members and member companies are more insurable and also have more options for affordable insurance.
SIMA is also working toward a solution with workforce development issues. Baby Boomers are retiring or selling their businesses and SIMA wants to attract younger generations to fill these gaps in the industry. The younger generation is more diverse, accepts technology quickly and thinks differently. SIMA wants to attract the younger generation to show the importance of what the snow and ice industry can offer. As an entrepreneur, there’s opportunities as a business owner to be successful and to create a good career, SIMA is trying to show how they can help entrepreneurs grow in snow and ice.
Lastly, SIMA is always looking to spread awareness to get more people in membership. SIMA looks to increase public and stakeholder awareness and education on the value of snow and ice management services and its role in risk management and public safety. The SIMA Foundation strives to bring more awareness about best practices and standards and to raise the bar of professionalism in the industry. As SIMA raises professionalism, it helps everyone in the industry to be better and do their jobs better.
